Seven Ways to Pass the Time at Home

Tuesday, 07 Apr, 2020

Just because we’re at home more than usual doesn’t mean we can’t find fun ways to stay active and engaged without going outside. Whether you’re home with your family or connecting through video chats, here are seven ocean-friendly suggestions to choose from!

1. Try New Culinary Adventures
Cooking for everyone at home. Every. Single. Day. Sea Shepherd’s galley chefs know better than anyone how to mix things up in the kitchen to keep the crew happy on long campaigns at sea when you have limited ingredients. Why not try some of the crowd-pleasing recipes from Sea Shepherd galley chef Laura Dakin, “Cookin’ Up a Storm: Sea Stories and Vegan Recipes” (also available in the US eStore). Get a head start by dressing the part in one of our organic cotton Jolly Roger kitchen aprons  (also the UK eStore).

2. Release Your Inner Artist
Bring the whole family together to construct your own model of the legendary Sea Shepherd vessel, M/V Steve Irwin at home. Using our model book, you can cut out and glue the simple version in one weekend, or if you’re feeling ambitious you can go for the advanced model complete with extendible crane and speedboats! Keep the tiny tots occupied with this free downloadable Sea Shepherd coloring and activities book.

3. Keep it Clean
Washing our hands with soap and water is one of the easiest ways to stop the spread of viruses and stay healthy. Sea Shepherd uses Dr. Bronner’s liquid soaps on our ships because they contain no synthetic foaming agents, thickeners, preservatives, dyes or whiteners, making them safe for the whole family, grey water systems and the environment! We also have our own Sea Shepherd 100% natural soap bars made with lemongrass, lavender, peppermint and tea tree oil, which can also be used as shampoo or shaving cream.

4. Stay Hydrated and Plastic-Free
Whether you’re following yoga sessions on YouTube, joining the kids’ dance competitions in your living room, or running marathon laps around your garden, it’s still important to stay hydrated while staying in shape. But we all know where plastic water bottles end up, so stick to a stylish reusable container such as Sea Shepherd’s insulated Jolly Roger bottle.

5. Take a Virtual Tour of a Sea Shepherd Vessel
Ever wonder what it’s really like onboard a Sea Shepherd vessel? Join us for a unique virtual tour of our flagship the M/V Ocean Warrior, or a 360° tour of the M/Y Bob Barker with deckhand Zoe Edwards. And just when you thought it would be more fun to be on a ship in the high seas than safe at home, check out this stomach-churning footage of the Bob’s crew Caught in a Storm! If that whets your appetite for more Sea Shepherd adventures, learn more about our volunteer crew in the 13-minute mini-documentary, Part-Time Heroes.

6. Cuddle Up in a Hoodie
When it’s too warm for a jacket but too chilly for a tee shirt, you’ll be glad to have a cozy hoodie at hand whether you’re walking the dogs, waving to neighbors from the safety of your window, or snuggling up with a good book for the evening. Sea Shepherd’s European concept store offers 100% organic cotton embroidered hoodies in two unique designs -- the Sea Shepherd Tattoo logo in black or Sea Shepherd Dive logo in navy blue – in unisex sizes for men and women.

7. Everyone Likes Surprises!
Birthdays, anniversaries, or just to make someone smile, it’s never a bad time to surprise someone with a Sea Shepherd Gift Card. It’s an easy way to shop safely from home while supporting our marine conservation campaigns. Sea Shepherd has eStores around the world, find the one closest to you here.
